Band begins for all students the summer before fifth grade. Save $15 if you register before April 21. Elementary Band Directors will meet with each interested fourth grade student in March, to help them select an appropriate instrument. Please do not sign up until your child brings home the Instrument Selection Form after meeting with the band director indicating which instrument they have selected.Register your child for band: TWO STEPSSTEP 1. Sign up for Summer Lessons. You should register for lessons before ordering an instrument. The store will ask you which session you have registered for so your instrument is delivered to the correct summer band site.Summer lessons consist of eight (8) group lessons (most are 45 minutes in length), over two consecutive weeks (Monday-Thursday, no Fridays). Lesson locations will be at the following sites this summer: Deerwood (DW), Westview (WV), Northview (NV) and East Lake Elementary (EL). Please choose lesson location with the dates and times most convenient for you. There are no make-ups for missed classes, nor refunds after June 1. There may be minor adjustments to these schedules based on student response. If adjustments are necessary, you will be notified. Fee includes summer lessons, lesson book and instrument supplies.STEP 2. Important: Be sure that you have selected “Band For All Maintenance Fee”, so your payment goes for your child’s instrument.3. Family Owned Instrument. Some families already own the instrument their child will use. If you plan to use an instrument you already own you will need to have a repair technician check the instrument and make necessary repairs so that it is in excellent playing condition. This may take several weeks, so be sure you have completed this step well before lessons begin. Based on the estimated cost of needed repairs, you may decide to rent an instrument from a music store and use the four-month introductory period to make sure your child is committed to that instrument before paying the cost for major repair work. Families who already own will need to purchase additional supplies that are included with store rented instruments. Please check with your teacher to know which additional supplies are required if you are using a family owned instrument. These three music stores will also be at Band Open House on May 7 and 8 (Highland Elementary) and May 9 (Deerwood Elementary) if you would like to order your instrument at that time. If you have completed Steps 1 and 2 you do not need to attend Band Open House. EXTREMELY IMPORTANTDo not allow your child to assemble or play his or her instrument before the first lesson! Students who try out instruments without proper instruction quickly develop bad habits that are very difficult to correct. Additionally, instruments can easily be damaged from improper handling. We highly recommend each student has a folding music stand for use at home. If you are obtaining an instrument through a store, please purchase your folding music stand through the store. Other great sources for music stands: a friend or relative's retired music stand or a spring garage sale. Students renting a school instrument will be able to purchase a stand for $15 when they come to their first summer band lesson.
